The east coast of the Big Island, commonly referred to as the Hāmākua Coast has glorious waterfalls, farms, beautiful views of pacific ocean, whales, botanical gardens and more! Hāmākua directly translates to ‘Breath of God’ in Hawaiian, and in our opinion is one of the most breathtaking drives in the world.…If you are driving south from Waipi’o Valley you will travel past charming historic sugar plantation towns and lush valleys and gulches. These gulches are deep valleys dotted with palm trees and alive with flowing freshwater streams. A notable gulch that is always a must see and to enjoy a picnic lunch would be Laupahoehoe Point Beach Park! Enjoy the warm Hawaiian breeze and the sound of waves crashing on the Hāmākua shoreline. The botanical gardens, Hawaiian Vanilla Company, and Akaka Falls State Park are a few gems located in this wonderful district.
